Antique Marzi & Remy "Pastoral" Butter Crock
This exceptional item is an authentic, antique ceramic dairy or larder crock—historically referred to as a Schmalztopf or Buttertöpfchen—designed in Central Europe to store and naturally keep butter, cheeses, or lard cool in the home before the era of modern refrigeration.
Crafted by the renowned German ceramic manufacturer Marzi & Remy in the Westerwald region, Germany. this utilitarian piece dates precisely to the Edwardian / Secessionist period, circa 1906–1908.
Design & Aesthetic Elements
The Pastoral Relief: The exterior of the crock features highly detailed, crisp, molded white slip reliefs depicting a peaceful country scene. One side showcases a prominent cow walking through a pasture, while the other side features a resting cow nestled beside its calf. The entire base is bordered by stylized, raised tufts of meadow grass and small wildflowers.
The Cobalt Contrast: A rich, high-gloss cobalt blue glaze heavily covers the recessed background, providing a deep, dramatic canvas that forces the white animal reliefs to remarkably stand out.
The Hardwood Lid: The crock is crowned by its original, thick, lathe-turned hardwood lid. The lid showcases a prominent, warm wood-grain texture and smooth perimeter beveling, bearing a gentle, natural wear that testifies to its decades of authentic use.
